Tamil films - Tax- free!

�Three Cheers� to Chief Minister �Kalignar� Karunanidhi, who has given �full exemption from entertainment tax for new films titled in Tamil�. Finance minister K.Anbazhagan presenting DMK government�s maiden budget gave a big boost to Tamil film industry by exempting them from entertainment tax.

The entertainment tax varies from 10 to 15 percent in the state and from now on, films with titles in Tamil will not have to pay tax! For example a Vetayadu Vilayadu or Thimiru is exempted from tax, while a Something Something, By 2 or Godfather will have to pay tax for using English titles.

The south Indian film chamber of commerce said that Tamilnadu government has given a new lease of life to the film industry by exempting them from entertainment tax, if they were named in Tamil. In Chennai city on an average Rs 50 ticket for a Tamil film, the entire amount will now go to the distributor and theatre. Earlier Rs 7.50 used to go to the government as entertainment tax. And with this new law, theatres will prefer to play films with Tamil titles and will have an upper hand on Bollywood and Hollywood films.

Making Tamil films with Tamil titles is a major incentive for the Tamil film industry which is sure to bring in a lot of support for Karunanidhi and his DMK government.
