Strike time in Kollywood
Kollywood is never away from controversies. In fact, it seems to attract them like oil paper does houseflies. The latest problem however is no run of the mill. It so serious that from 29 August, Tamil film artistes have decided to go on a 'non-cooperation movement'.
The man at the centre of all controversies is director-actor Thangar Bachchan whose carping comments against film artistes in an interview to a weekly has sparked this bout of trouble.
Thangar Bachchan, the director of films like Azhagi, Solla Marantha Kathai and Thendral, had always a penchant to land himself in trouble through some ill-conceived words. He recently chose to describe Tamil film actresses in an unparliamentary way.
The controversial interview did not go unnoticed as the artistes, who were always not enamoured with his ways, got down to get him down to size.
The South India Film Artistes Association dashed off a letter to FEFSI union urging them to boycott the post production works of Thangar's film in the making Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy.
Subsequently, the FEFSI issued a 'red card' on the director. Hence all works were halted since last Friday. A cornered Thangar Bachchan tried to wriggle out of the situation by some eleventh hour manoeuvring. But apparently, it was all to no avail.
An increasingly belligerent Nadigar Sangam in a press release made it clear that the artistes would not be participating in any shoot from Monday.
Sources in the industry say that the artistes want an apology and show of remorse from Thangar Bachchan. The pity here is: Thangar needs to be punished for his stray words. But why are other film producers also made to pay a price.
