Rains dampen the mood!

At the fag end of a brilliant year at the box-office, collections of new Tamil releases have started dropping due to bad weather and poor content. It looks like people are not patronising the movies as before, only Sivakasi among November releases is a safe bet.

Adding to new releases woe has been the unprecedented rains over the past few weeks, which resulted in floods in several towns and smaller stations across the state. The business has been badly affected in Chennai city Chengalpet, parts of NSC and the entire TT (Tiruchi-Thanjavur) area.

Says Abhirami Ramanathan, the president of Tamilnadu theatres owners association: Rains have washed away a good part of the Diwali box-office. In many places theatres have temporarily shut down due to lack of patrons and in Chennai city and surrounding in many theatres there are no night shows.

Meanwhile Sathyam cinemas in Chennai is an exception as it continues to do extraordinary business, reporting 100 percent during weekend. Harry Potter and Goblets of Fire has nearly netted Rs 21 Lakhs in its opening weekend!

On the other hand the new Tamil release Kastoorimaan which carried excellent word-of-mouth and rave reviews from media is a wash-out at the box-office! Even the smutty Sorry Enakku Kalyanam Ayichu collapsed and on Friday an above average film like ABCD opened with a first day collection of only 60 percent in Chennai city.

Let us hope that December will bring some cheer to Tamil box-office as a dozen big and small releases are due.
