Oduvil Unnikrishnan passed away
One of the best character actors in Malayalam cinema Oduvil Unnikrishnan, died of renal failure at a private hospital in Kozhikode today morning.
He was 62 and is survived by wife and two daughters.
Beginning his career as a drama artiste over two decades ago after enrolling himself with the drama troupe KPAC, Oduvil, as he is affectionately known, went on to earn the reputation of one of the best character actors the Malayalam film industry had ever produced.
His enthralling performances in 'Nizhal Kuthu', 'Devasuram', 'Kathapurushan' and a host of other movies brought him close to the hearts of filmgoers who always watched his performances with great admiration.
Winning his maiden State award for his scintillating act in'Nizhal Kuthu', Oduvil bagged many other film awards.
He had also performed in recent blockblusters including 'Achuvinte Amma', 'MeesaMadhavan' and 'Rasathanthram'.
A versatile actor, Unnikrishnan had immortalized many a character on the silver screen, be it serious or humorous. He was more at ease with handling humour just like the person he was in real life.
"Malayalam cinema had not been able to fully use his talent," renowned film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan said hearing the news of his demise. Unnikrishnan had brilliantly portrayed the character of a hangman in Adoor's 'Nizhalkuthu'.
Even while he was ailing and was undergoing weekly dialysis, Sathyan Anthikkad made him act in his latest films 'Achuvinte Amma' and 'Rasathantram', the roles which he made memorable.
His role in 'Devasuram' directed by I V Sasi and scripted by Ranjith is one glorious example of his acting prowess. His character in M T Vasudevan Nair's 'Oru Cheru Punchiri' was a different one which he did with characteristic composure.
Comedy also came in handy for him and scores of films in which he played such roles proved better than the movies casting stock comedy actors.
Nedumudi Venu said there was no actor in his mould who could replace him.
Sukumari, who had acted with him in several movies, said it was a deep painful moment for her.
