Mohanlal gets bail in defamation case

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Thrissur on Friday and secured bail in a defamation case filed by veteran writer-critic Sukumar Azhikode. The court granted bail to Mohanlal on two solvent sureties and a bond valued at Rs 20, 000.

The war of words between the two veterans broke out when Azhikode came out in support of thespian actor Thilakan, who was sacked from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) on grounds of indiscipline.

Azhikode attacked Mohanlal, the then AMMA office bearer who was allegedly instrumental in denying opportunities to Thilakan in the film industry, saying that the actor has become old and should limit himself to roles matching his age and figure. He also criticized the actor for endorsing jewellery brands.

The actor retorted by saying that Azhikode must be having some 'hallucination' and that he considered Azhikode's statements as some 'aged uncle's joke. The superstar allegedly said the writer might be mentally deranged to make such statements, following which Azhikode filed a defamation suit.
