Mani Rathnam, Sathyajith Ray and Guru Dutt in TIME list
Satyajith Ray's Apu trilogy, Guru Dutt's all time classic Pyasa and Mani Rathnam's Nayagan are the only three Indian films which find a place in a list of 100 all time great films compiled by TIME magazine.
Put together by TIME magazine's critics, Richard Schickel and Richard Corliss, the unranked list of the 100 greatest films has a host of acclaimed movies like Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, Lord of the Rings trilogy and Pulp Fiction. Of all the films made in India, only three films made it to the list. And our very own Mani Rathnam's film made it to the list.
The Kamal Haasan starrer Nayagan has been described by TIME critics as a defining work in Mani Rathnam's career. Mani Rathnam is the only living Indian director to be featured in the list."His movies, often dramatizing social unrest and political terrorism, churn with narrative tension and camera energy that would be the envy of Hollywood directors, if they were to see them," they raved.
The tagline of Nayakan in TIME- : A terrific gangster epic in the Godfather style. Incidentally Godfather Part 1 and 2 too find a place in the list of TIME's list of all time great films.
Ray's Apu Trilogy - Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apu Sansar (1959) - trace the life of a Bengali family and their son Apu as he moves from childhood in a rural village through his youth in Varanasi, where the family later shifts, to manhood and marriage in Kolkatta. These films show that "Ray's filmmaking is direct in manner, simple in its means and profound in its impact," the critics said.
Describing Dutt's Pyasa as a soulful romantic film, the TIME critics say the writer-producer-director star paints a glamorous portrait of an artiste's isolation through dappled imagery and the sensitive picturising of S D Burman's famous songs.
