This is the third film within the last month to rest squarely on guys; HEYY BABYY and DHAMAAL being the other two movies. Interestingly, all three are comedies, though DHOL does have a bit of crime in it. But its an all-boys show nonetheless.
DHOL is about Sharman Joshi, Tushaar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu and Rajpal Yadav, who are on a get rich fast trip. Director Priyadarshan pumps in a lot of gags to keep you interested in the proceedings but goes overboard. Agreed there are those very funny moments but he stretches them, going on and on The end result - the jokes get stale and the movie is 30 minutes too long. A serious lapse on the makers part.
The one actor who stands tall is Rajpal Yadav. Nay, in fact this diminutive dynamite towers over the rest of the cast with his super comedy that leaves you laughing your guts out. Clearly, Rajpal after his silly performance in RAM GOPAL VARMA KI AAG, makes you want to stand up and applaud his genius. Kunal Khemu is coming into his own, growing both in appearance (read screen presence) and confidence (read body language). Tushaar Kapoor and Sharman Joshi, too, complement the other two as they go on from one funny scene to another with ease.
The girls have not much of a role. Though Tanushree Dutta has much more scenes than Payal Rohatgi (looking different), she fails to capitalize on her screen time, performance wise. At most times, she looks like she is sleep walking through her part, sometimes with a bored expression. As for Payal, she projects a different role, than the dare bare ones, she has made herself know for. You can see that she is making a serious attempt to make amends.
Rasika Joshi as the landlady who houses the four friends is endearing in her scenes while Tiku Talsania, Om Puri and Asrani just about pass muster. Murli Sharma as the bad man in search of the DHOL, too stands out with his menace.
DHOL is not bad, its not great either. For a director of Priyadarshans caliber, you expected much more.
DHOL just about manages to give you the right sound!
