Balu Mahendra opens Cinema School

Known for his sensuous films and daringly different from the run of the mill stuff, ace director Balu Mahendra has launched his cinema school. Having cut down on production and direction since the time of his heart attack a decade ago, Balu was afflicted by paralysis three years ago.

A cinematographer par excellence, Balu had the first taste of the medium in the Malayalam movie Nel. His first directorial venture was Kokila in Kannada which was believed to be a movie much ahead of its time.

With the experience of 19 films - his last one 'Adhu Oru Kana Kalam' coming a cropper - Balu taking a diverted track has come as a surprise to the film folks.

Located at Saligraman, the school offers a one-year course for the aspirants looking the medium as a career. Balu's son Shanki will be the supporting influence to his father.
