Audience apathy to young stars continues!
Is Malayalam films all about Mammootty and Mohanlal and to a certain extent Dileep? The answer is a resounding Yes if one were to go by the box-office collections in the state. Only two out of 20 odd films released in the last four months have made money and they are Mohanlal Udayananu Tharam, a blockbuster and Mammoottys Vesham, a hit.
Forget hits or super hits the audience are simply refusing to accept smaller actors like Kunchakko Boban, Pritviraj, Jayasurya, Sunil, Indrajeet, Riaz Khan, Jishnu, Siddharth and many others. In no other industry has the young blood or heroes below 30 years been so shabbily treated by cine goers.
The shocking story is that when Thommanum Makkalum starring the 50 plus heroes like Mammootty, Rajan.P.Dev and Lal opened last Friday, it was a 100 percent opening at Kavitha, Ernakulam. A week before when Kunchakko Boban film Junior Senior released the film got only 18 percent collections on the opening day in the same city!
If this is the condition in Keralas premier city which has the largest chunk of young audience what would be the films plight in smaller stations? Today the situation is alarming as there are only three major distributors in Kerala- Swargachitra, Lal Creations and Aroma Films and they only distribute superstar films. And those who come forward and release films with smaller stars close down immediately after the city run!
There are about 57 Malayalam films lying in the cans for want of distributors and even those with deep pockets like media magnet and business tycoon P.V.Gangadharan of Grihalakshmi Productions are ending up with egg on their face. Their latest film Achuvinte Amma, a female oriented film made on a budget of Rs 65 Lakhs could just manage to make Rs 7 Lakhs as share from Kairali in Thiruvananthapuram in 40 days, the highest in the state, while in Kottayam its share was just Rs 1,10,000!
The literate young audience of Kerala just refuses to accept young heroes and prefers a Mammootty or Mohanlal. At the same time this young generation is encouraging young heroes from Tamil like Vijay, Surya, Silambarasan and Dhanush whose films make more money than Chakkochan, Pritiviraj and Jayasurya!
