Adoor wins Dadasaheb Phalke

Adoor Gopalakrishnan is the winner of the 2004 Dadasaheb Phalke awards for his outstanding contribution to the Indian film industry.

Adoor, 64, was surprised when he was told that he had won the award this year. He had won the National award for best director for his debut film 'Swayamvaram'. He went on to win many international awards for his powerful portrayal of simple and ordinary life on the screen.

Adoor had also won the awards for bets script writer.

He began his career at the age of 8, on the stage. He later honed his film-making skills at Pune Film and Television Institute. His internationally acclaimed films include 'Elipathayam', 'Mukhamukham', 'Anantharam', 'Mathilukal', 'Vidheyan', 'Kathapurushan' and 'Nizhalkuthu'.

"Usually, the award is given to only senior artistes of the film world. I'm honored that I had won the award at a relatively young age," he said.
