Engal Anna

Produced by Vijaykant himself under the banner of Andal Azhagar Cine Combines, film would appeal very much to die-hard fans of Vijaykant who plays SP, a rich industrialist. Life has not been smooth for SP, who lost his father when he was very young. His father Lal had in Rajiv, a very bitter enemy. But when both of them come to know that SP and Indraja (daughter of Rajiv) were in love they forget their enmity and decide to unite the youngsters. On the day of the betrothal, Indrajas cousin (Anadharaj) who loves Indraja one-sidedly stalls the wedding with the help of his father Thyaghu by revealing the other side of Lal that he has another wife with a son (younger Lal) and daughter (younger Swarnamalya). Then a plot created by Thyaghu kills Rajiv and Lal is blamed for this. Lal gets arrested and dies of heart attack. Anyhow, after Lals s death, Thyaghu turns to SP and instills in his mind the notion that his father was not a good man. And pretending love, with Indrajas consent Thyaghu cleans away all of SPs property. Later only does SP realise the truth. He then starts life afresh with the help of Manivannan who makes him understand that his father was not what Thyaghu had made him out to be. SP works hard and becomes a successful businessman. But when Indraja stood by her uncle in cheating SP, he turned bitter at heart and pledged to remain a bachelor all his life. He lives along with his friend PA Vadivel, who too has decided to remain a bachelor. SP sponsors for his sisters studies (not revealing his identity) and get her to his next door. In the meantime Namitha and four of her friends come to stay at the house next to SPs house where Swarnamalya stays. And SPs house too has some new members. There is young Prabhu Deva son of Manivannan and his cousin Pandiarajan, who too have come to live with SP. The interesting happenings that follow, interspersed with the right dose of humor, love (between Prabhu Deva and Swarnamalya, Vijaykant and Namitha) , sentiments and all, forms the story of Engal Anna.

Vijaykant, undoubtedly, is the main attraction of the film. He does the role of SP, the Engal Anna, in a really commendable manner and makes his presence felt throughout the film. He has made a different attempt in humor, which he has succeeded creditably. Namitha the debutant heroine looks ok and has been used only as an added attraction. Vadivel is the backbone of the whole film. He brings out rib tickling comedy along with Prabhu Deva and Pandia Rajan and at times tears come out of the eyes due to uncontrollable laughter. Swarnamalyas performance is adequate. Indraja is sufficient. Anandharaj is not being properly utilized. Similarly there is no scope for Manivannan, and Lal. Siddique has done a good work of the script, based on his own story. Barring few fights the director has retained the original version. It is the well worked-out script that makes the film an enjoyable one. Two of Devas numbers Mudhal Mudhala and Konji Konji are good. Anandha Kuttans camera is worth mentioning.
