Shalini is a south Indian film actress debuted in the Malayalam movie Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku, alongside Superstar Mohanlal. She had a short bus successful career as a child artist, but later came back to the industry in another Malayalam Movie Aniyathi Pravu and became a star in Tamil. Her pairing with Kunchacko Boban in Malayalam was a big hit.

She started acting at the age of three appearing in the film Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku for which she won the Kerala State Award for Best Child Artiste. As a child artist, Shalini has completed over 80 films in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. Shalini made her debut as a heroine in the Malayalam movie Aniyathi Pravu which was remade in Tamil as Kadhalukku Mariyadhai - a box-office hit. Her best moments came when Mani Ratnam cast her opposite Madhavan in Alaipayuthey. After her marriage to fellow actor Ajith, she left the film industry.

Although her mother tongue is Malayalam, she speaks fluent Tamil as well. In 1998, she wore a two-piece swimsuit for Ms.Madras, which caused a lot of stir,and she was warned for indecencies and not to repeat them in the future.

Shalini has a younger sister - Shamili - who is also an actress.

She is of Kerala origin born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India into a Christian household. She is married to actor Ajith Kumar. In 2007, they announced that they were expecting their first child in early 2008. On January 3rd 2008, Ajith and Shalini were blessed with a baby girl named as Anoushka.
