Shafi’s Thommannum Makkalum is an escapist comic book like fantasy entertainer. Despite the often predictable and shallow script, the lead players like Rajan.P.Dev, Mammootty and Lal are in their elements here. Their characterization makes the film looks like a sequel to Tenkasipattanam.
Don’t look for logic in the film and just sit back and enjoy the fun as three 50-plus actors jump, fight, sing, dance, does dare-devilry and provide some crass comedy. Yet the final product is racy and the running time is 127 minutes which whiz by before you realizes it!
The message is simple in Thommannum Makkalum - even thieves can have a change of heart and be honest and do-gooders for the society. Thomman (Rajn P.Dev) and his two sons Sivan (Mammootty) and Satyan (Lal) are tough-as-nail robbers in a city. One day they have a change of heart and decide to reform themselves but knowing that nobody around them will believe them, they take off to a village in Tamilnadu to start a new life.
However circumstances force them to go back to their old profession as they encounter Thevar the villain in the village. Sivan meanwhile falls in love with Thevar’s daughter complicating things further. Due to a sudden twist Thomman and his sons turn saviors and fights against the baddies form the rest of the story.
Expectedly the story is pure balderdash but the idea of Shafi the director and Lal the producer is to just string together a plot taken from various films and put together to provide a fun movie. They have made Mammootty dance and do comedy scenes which he has tried hard to accomplish. Lal supports him in all departments and Rajan.P.Dev is refreshing from his usual villain roles. Salim Khan as Thevar is superb. Alex Paul’s music is fast and peppy and has a rhythmic beat.
