Cast: Vijay, Priyanka Chopra, Revathy
Director: A. Majid
Story: A. Majid
Screenplay: A. Majid
The concept of Tamizhan is deadly and daring but the way the message is conveyed leaves you exhausted and stressed. The film should have served as an eye opener to how the legal system works in our country. But ultimately a howling didacticism prevails over clarity of vision, logic and reason. The film seems to have been ghost directed by S.A.Chandrasekhar, father of Vijay, though only the screenplay has been credited to him. Debutant director Majith was an associate of Chandrasekhar and Shankar and their influence shows in the film. After seeing the film, one wonders whether this is Muthalvan-2 or one of the old movies of Chandrasekhar.
The film opens when a happy go lucky guy just out of Law College Surya (Vijay), roams around with his friends (Vivek & gang) and meets a girl Priya (Priyanka Chopra) and instantly falls in love with her. When his sister (Revathy) advises him to do something different in life, which would get him name and fame, Surya finds that India’s external debts run into thousands of crores. He believes that if each citizen is able to give his share to the government the debt can be cleared. By paying up Rs 4000 to the President of India towards his share of the country’s debt, he makes everyone emulate him and the debt is cleared overnight which results in President of India releasing a special postal stamp in honour of him(???).
This incident makes him serious about his profession and he feels that he can do something for the common man by making them aware of how the legal system with all its loopholes works in our country. Surya’s brother-in-law (Nassar) is a leading lawyer who specialises in labour cases. Trouble brews for Nassar when he tries to fight a case for the labourers of GK Estates, who have been unceremoniously sacked from their jobs. GK (Ashish Vidyarthi) hatches a plot and Nassar is killed. At the time of his death Nassar tells Surya to “Never take the law into your hands, but use legal means to finish off GK”. These prophetic words make Surya a crusader who cleans up the underbelly of a state beset by corruption and hidden agendas. In the process, he also mocks at the judiciary and also writes a book that simplifies the legal system to the commoner. Overnight he becomes a role model for millions of ‘Tamizhans’!
Vijay invests so much conviction, physical energy and emotive skill into his role that his performance is far superior to the material assigned to him. In the first half he has proved that he can do light hearted comedy. Priyanka Chopra is a total waste, as she is seen only for four songs and some crude comedy with balloons. She cannot dance or emote and looks uncomfortable throughout. The rest of the cast Nassar, Ashish, Revathy etc sleepwalks through the film. The music of new boy D.Imman is disappointing, but his re-recording is impressive. Cameraman Ekambaram seems to be obsessed with top angle shots.
