Jayaram's Salperu Ramankutty is a full length comedy entertainer for the entire family. The first half is light hearted but post interval the film slips into a sentimental melodrama.

Ramankutty (Jayaram) is a do-gooder young man in a village. Ramankutty is a head master in a school. Though he is much junior to others in the school he is given the post of HM in that particular private school solely because his father had earned a good name among the public. So Ramankutty, a member of a wealthy and influential family in the village is adored by a lot of people. All young women of the village wants to marry him. In fact he has a number of cousins in the competition.

Ramankutty has four uncles (Janardhanan, Jagathy, Lalu Alex and Raju) who are after him to marry their daughters. Each try to influence Ramankutty's mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) to pick their daughter but she leaves the decision to her son. Jagathy's daughter Sangeeta (Gayathri Jayaram) comes back after her studies from Mumbai and it is love at first sight for Ramankutty.

But Ramankutty's image built over years is tarnished when he is caught red-handed by villagers from a local prostitute's house. It is Jagathy who had a relation with the lady (Nirosha) but poor Ramankutty is accused and blamed by one and all. Jagathy also lets him down and his marriage to Sangeetha is cancelled. How Ramankutty overcomes all the troubles later proves his innocence is told in a hilarious way.
