Joshi has always been one of the most sought-after directors in Malayalam cinema. Ever since he made his debut with Tiger Salim and later won lot of admirers with Moorkhan, Joshi has been a hot favourite of the family audiences who loved to see his ‘family-action’ movies. His New Delhi, Nirakkoottu, Nair Saab, Sandarbham, Muhoortham Pathinonnu Muppathinu, Kauravar, Dhruvam, Number Twenty Madras Mail, got him the image of the maker of action movies tailored for the family audience. His name became synonymous with action films made on a large canvas and with big names in the cast. Of course he has also made films with not much action content in them, like Kuttetan. He continued this with films like Sainyam, Lelam, Pathram, Vazhunnor, Dubai and his last film Praja.
As an actor, Dileep has emerged as one who could handle sentiments and humour with equal ease. And it is this aspect that has made him the favourite of family audiences. But Dileep has never had the image of an action hero. And hence Dileep is one such actor whom the audience least expects to see as the hero of a Joshi film. And it is this least expected thing that Joshi and Dileep have ventured to do this time. Joshi is making his latest film with Dileep in the lead role. This is the first time when Dileep is playing the lead in a Joshi film. On one occasion earlier only did Dileep act in a Joshi film - that was in Sainyam, and that happened when Dileep was just making his entry into films as an actor and was not at all known. In that film he was just one in a group of youngsters recruited to the Air Force. And now, over a decade later, when Dileep has risen to be the most sought-after star in Malayalam, Joshi makes Runway with him in the lead.
The film tells the story of two brothers Unni and Balu. Unni was earlier in the Gulf and is now back home. Balu, a sincere Police Officer, is on the trail of one Valayar Paramasivam, who is notorious for his illicit trades, especially in the smuggling of illicit spirit across the border of the state. And in the course of his investigations, Balu is led to some very startling revelations. His investigations lead him to none other than his own brother Unni, whom he realises to be the same Valayar Paramasivam whom he is seeking. This is the main highlight of the plot of Runway, which has Dileep playing Unni a.k.a. Valayar Paramasivam and Indrajith in the role of Balu. The clash between the two brothers is worked out deftly by the director Joshi as well as the scenarists Sibi K Thomas and Udayakrishna. While Dileep is doing the lead for the first time in a Joshi film, Harisri Ashokan, who plays his friend Biju, too is acting in a Joshi film for the first time. It must be remembered that Harisri Ashokan and Dileep have always formed an excellent team and have appeared together in many a hit movies. Kavya Madhavan plays the female lead, doing the role of Gopika, a young girl who is a dancer and a singer and who is the daughter of Krishnan Nair, who lives in the outhouse in the compound of Unni’s family house. Unni’s mother Bharathi Amma has begun to see her as her future daughter-in-law, i.e. Unni’s wife. Kavya Madhavan has, of course, played Dileep’s heroine in many films, starting from her first film as a heroine - Chandranudikunna Dikkil and including many other hit films including Dileep’s biggest hit Meesha Madhavan. They have, no doubt, formed a very excellent pair on screen.
Kaviyoor Ponnamma plays Bharathi Amma. State award winning actor Oduvil Unnikrishnan too acts in Runway. It is after a long gap that he is being seen in a Joshi film. His last film with Joshi was Kuttetan. Also in he cast are Jagathy Sreekumar, Cochin Hanefa, Riyaz Khan and Kalasala Babu. Lyrics by Gireesh Puthencherry have been set to tune by Suresh Peters while P Sukumar wields the camera, Joseph Nellickal does the art-direction and PC Mohanan is in charge of the editing department. The film will soon be brought to the theatres by Swargachitra.
