Director Lenin Rajendran's Rathrimazha gives the feeling of a poetry being transformed on screen. It is a sensitive portrayal of a disabled dancer's anguish, after a freak incident confines him on wheel chair for the rest of his life. Like some of his earlier films, Lenin has delved deep into the minds of some of his characters and unveils a touching tale with contemporary dance, enchanting music and great visuals, as the backdrop.
As per the credits, Rathrimazha has been inspired by the story, Website, by P.Chandramathy. The compositions by Hindustani musician Ramesh Narayanan, based on the lines by ONV Kurup and the poem titled Rathrimazha by Sugathakumari, takes the viewer to a different world altogether. S.Kumar's visuals are truly poetic as well. All these perhaps have been done intentionally by the director, as the story often takes a fantasy mood.
Harikrishnan (Vineeth) and Meera (Meera Jasmine) start knowing each other through the chat room in a matrimonial site. A strong romance blossoms between them but its only sometime later that she learns that the handsome man that she is talking to on the computer screen lives in wheel chair, with a half-paralyzed body. But that doesn't affect her love for him.
Hari, born into a rich household, had learnt Kalari and joined a contemporary dance school run by Mohini (Chitra Iyer). He was a brilliant dancer but destiny had different plans and he gets fatally injured while rehearsing a trick. Now, with Meera by his side, Hari is all set to make his dreams come true by choreographing a fresh theme. But as he often said, he was the most fortunate man in the world and the most unfortunate one as well!
Vineeth, a well known dancer, has easily come up with one of his best performances yet, as Harikrishnan. With the demeanor of a thorough professional, he seems to fit into the mindset of the character with remarkable ease. Meera Jasmine is good, but she generally follows a similar pattern of gloom that has now been identified as her style. Chitra Iyer, known as a singer until now, is a revelation as an actor. The rest of cast including Manoj K Jayan, Lalu Alex and Diya have also played their parts pretty well.
Rathrimazha exudes a genuine charm and the director has carried the tempo throughout its running time. Even then, with its length that goes up to 2 hours, one gets the feeling of 'too much of a good thing', at times. But that doesn't take away the merits of this finely crafted movie which will remain in the minds of the viewer for long.
