Puthooram Puthri Unniyarcha

Cast: Vani Viswanath,Devan,Kunchacko Boban
Language: Malayalam
Banner: Shiny Films
Director: P. G. Viswambharan
Camera: Ramachandra Babu
Lyrics: Yusuf Ali Kecheri
Music: Usha Khanna
Year: 2002

Unniyarcha (Vani Viswanath) is the bold and beautiful daughter of Kannappa Chekavar of Puthooram Veedu and she is a trained warrior. She is betrothed to her cousin Chandu (Devan) during childhood. But as she grows up, she does not have any interest in him as he is not very chivalrous. Even Unniyarcha''s brother Aromal (Siddique) does not like Chandu. Chandu is already jealous of Aromal and after being rejected by Unniyarcha , he leaves the Puthooram house, where he was brought up by his uncle (Unniyarcha''s father). He goes over to the camp of Aringodar, who is an archrival of Kannappa Chekavar. Provoked by Aringodar, he cheats Aromal during a duel, for which Chandu is called in by Kannappa Chekavar (who still loved and trusted his nephew) to go in as Aromal''s second. After this, he even kills Aromal very treacherously. Years pass byand the next generation - Unniyarcha''s son Aromalunni and Aromal''s son Kannappanunni - set out to avenge the death of Aromal. ''Puthooram Puthri Unniyarcha'', which is an adaptation of a story taken from the annals of the Vadakkanpaattu, the ballad-type folklore of the Malabar, is a film that fails to impress beyond a certain limit.

In spite of the presence of stars like Vani Viswanath and teenage sensation Kunchacko Boban, the film fails to deliver. Vani Viswanath does not match the earlier heroines who had played the same role with great respect. Her masculine figure does not suit the songs and dances. Devan and Siddique does a good job while Kunchacko Boban does not seem the right person to do the role of Aromalunni. Captain Raju is well cast as Kannappa Chekavar. The main problem with the film is that it is the old wine in a new bottle.
