Cast: Kamal Haasan, Simran, Abbas, Sneha, Ramesh Khanna, Manivannan
Banner: Media Dreams
Dialogue: 'Crazy' Mohan
Lyrics: Vaali, Kamal Haasan
Starting from 'Apoorva Sagotharargal', the Crazy team of Kamal Haasan and 'Crazy' Mohan have provided good humor in most of their earlier Tamil movie projects (Aboorva Sahodharargal, Michael Madana Kaama Rajan, Indran Chandran, Magalir Mattum, Sathi Leelavathi, Avvai Shanmughi, Kaadala Kaadala, Thenali). They have joined hands again to create yet another light comedy movie. While Pammal K Sambantham does provide good humor, it falls short to be considered as a full-length comedy movie because of its unbalanced mix of drama and humor.
Pammal Kalyana Sambantham (Kamal Haasan) or Pammal K Sambantham for short (!) is a bachelor who hates the marriage institution and he wants to remain a bachelor for his entire life. He works as a stunt master in the movie industry. He stays in a lodge along with other bachelor friends Anand (Abbas), Ramesh Khanna and Veiyapuri. P.K.Sambantham's friends are also vowed not to get married. On the other side, there is this doctor (who is a surgeon as well as pediatrician ! ) Janaki (Simran) who also hates the marriage concept. Malathi (Sneha) is a computer professional and she is Janaki's close friend.
The story mainly revolves around the 2 men P.K. Sambantham & Anand, and the 2 women with interesting personalities - G. Janaki & Malathi. Anand falls in love with Malathi and he elopes with her on the day of her wedding with some one else. Anand & Malathi get married in a Police station against the wish of P.K. Sambantham & his friends. Anand soon realizes that Malathi got married to him because of the potential to go to Australia with him. Since that opportunity fails, within 6 months, things go bad in Anand & Malathi's married life. While Anand seeks the help of P.K. Sambantham to resolve his marriage problems, Malathi seeks the help of Janaki. While doing so, P.K. Sambantham and Janaki meet often and a situation develops. To resolve it, Janaki chooses to 'pretend' temporarily as if she has fallen in love with P.K. Sambantham. Will the 'Master of Bachelor' be able to maintain his Single status ?! Can he resist the power of love from Janaki ? Will Janaki's selfish plan be revealed ? These questions form the rest of the movie !
For Kamal Haasan, acting in a comedy role is a cakewalk. Having worked with 'Crazy' Mohan for a long time, Kamal Haasan knows how to delivers the comedy dialogues with ease and many times, to improvise them using his gestures and acting. Kamal Haasan has done a good job in depicting his P.K.Sambantham character. While his comedy scenes are good, his sad scenes fail to create an impact due to the way they have been narrated. Kamal Haasan has a good flair when it comes to speaking the Tamil language in different styles in his movies and he has done it well in talking the Madras-Tamil language in this movie (viewers might recall him speaking in 'Coimbatore Tamil' in 'Sathi Leelavathi', 'Sri Lankan Tamil' in Thenali, 'Thirunalveli Tamil' in 'Peyar Sollum Pillai', 'Malayalee Tamil' in the Kameshwaran character in the movie 'Michael Madana Kaamarajan' and several styles in the movie ‘Ellam Inbamayam’). Kamal Haasan's P.K.Sambantham character (the Madras Tamil accent, costume, hairstyle, long side burns) reminds me of his earlier character Subramaniya Raju from the movie 'Michael Madana Kaama Rajan'.
Simran has an offbeat role in this movie. Simran has done more than her usual, 'dancing, smiling, dancing' roles this time. Eventhough she does not do any comedy by herself, her acting in the situation comedy scenes is apt. Savitha Radhakrishnan's dubbing voice for Simran helps the Janaki character. Ramesh Khanna and Veiyapuri have acted well as Kamal's friends and they do deliver several punch dialogues well. Abbas has done some offbeat acting (instead of his usual 'pretty model boy' roles) and he has provided the required acting. Sneha looks good as usual and she provides the required acting. Unnikrishnan Namboothri has acted well as Kamal Haasan's Grand Father and he reminds me of his bed-ridden grand father role in 'Kandukonden Kandukonden' when he tries to say 'Uyil Uyil' !. Manivannan has a smaller role with no jokes. Madhan Bob and Neelu have done their parts well. Kalpana has done overacting and it is annoying in some scenes. There are also a lot of other people who fill in the screen with insignificant roles - this includes: Ravichandran, Sreeman, Charlie, Sugumari, Santhana Bharathi, R.S.Sivaji. The people I wanted see in a comedy movie like this and who were obviously missing were Delhi Ganesh and Director Mouli himself !
