Sathyan Anthikkad is aware that showing off money on screen is not a guarantee for success. His penchant is to make the film too close to life so that it strikes a chord somewhere with the audience. He makes the audience feel as though what is happening on the screen is happening in their neighbourhood. It is the trademark of Sathyan films-- simple but beautiful stories. 'Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka' is also not a different one. Once again he has been successful in making a story in the same Malayalam style with enough humor touch.
Monitoring the mindset of Keralites, Sreenivasan always comes out with stories that attempt to mirror the cross section of contemporary social scenario. While presenting a domestic drama tinged with a profuse dose of humour, this film satirically looks at the plight of trouble-torn Kannur, the traditional hotbed of high intensity political violence. Set against picturesque rural settings, the film centers on the day to day life of the village dwellers representing average Keralites who have passionate affinity towards politics.
For Kunchacko Boban the role of Jayakanthan has given a break in his career. He has proved he could perform well as an ordinary, glamorous man too quite different from his usual chocolate hero type roles. For Samyuktha Varma too, there was nothing special to do with the role of Vinodhini. Another notable feature in this movie was Cochin Haneefa's outstanding performance as a comedian. 'Anappachan' has been made an unforgettable character in the movie by his excellent and natural performance, no doubt.
The story is all about Jayakanthan, son of Narendran who left Paruthippara 25 years ago after eloping with Devi, a native of the village. The plot unfolds as he enters Paruthippara. Jayakanthan's purpose is to bring home the monetary compensation for the land property owned by his father Narendran which is now acquired for the construction of newly sanctioned airport. But he is forced to accept the bitter fact that he is deprived of that valuable property due to technical snags and bureaucratic wrangling driven by intrigues and nepotism. In the meantime he comes into contact with some soft-hearted people in Paruthippara-a former naxalite Vasu (Oduvil Unnikrishnan), panchayat president Vinodini (Samyuktha Varma) and Swathi (Asin).
