Manikasseri Kovilakam is one of the most aristocratic princely families managed by Prabhakaran, Chandran, Somanathan and Mohandas. Their nephew Ananthan Unni (Jayaram) is the next ‘heir’ or ‘Thamburan’ if royalty had continued. Thamburan is supposed to marry his cousin or ‘Mura pennu’ Sridevi, who unfortunately is in love with a doctor. It is at this juncture Thamburan falls in love with Hemalatha a poor girl who has to look after her family. She pledges her house for Rs. 3 lakhs, but the money gets stolen.

Anatha Varma the police commissioner comes to her rescue and recovers the stolen bag. Hemalatha later meets Anatha Varma in the garb of a lawyer and a doctor. But she soon finds out that he is none other than our man 'Thamburan'. She falls for him creating more comical situations. Meanwhile Thamburan is under pressure from his relatives to marry Sridevi. As per the will written by his father, it is stated that Ananthan Unni should marry and have a 'heir', otherwise the government will take over the palace wealth. How Ananthan Unni, Sridevi and Hemalatha thwart the ambitions of crooked uncles forms the rest of the story. Viji Thampy has used graphics very effectively in the climax.
