Mithya is a film with an extremely intelligent script and the screenplay unfolds in a brilliant manner. Rajat Kapoor has executed the film with finesse. However Mithya is meant for a niche segment of audiences. The story and screenplay will appeal more to the multiplex crowd who are interested in viewing different kinds of films. Mithya does not belong to any one particular genre, but encompasses different genres like black comedy, thriller, drama etc all in one. Mithya begins out as comedy with an aspiring actor who comes to Mumbai to fulfil his biggest dream of being an actor. After several setbacks, he feels that his fate has finally turned. But this good fortune once again turns in its axis and he is faced with a risky unusual situation. A film that will no doubt appeal to the intellectual, it also has a sombre look and feel. On the whole, the film is extremely appealing due to its novel script and well woven screenplay.

The film has been directed by Rajat Kapoor and the screenplay too has been done by him as well as Saurabh Shukla. The star cast includes Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia, Naseeruddin Shah, Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Pathak, Iravati, Harsh Chhaya etc. The music for the film has been done by Sagar Desai.

VK (Ranvir Shorey) is an aspiring actor and comes to Mumbai with the intention to fulfil his dream. He faces several setbacks and rejection in Mumbai, but one fine day, it seems like his fate has turned around. VK gets a meaty, different role. However VK is forced to do this real life role, of playing an impostor of an underworld don as his face resembles an underworld don. The rival gang decides to take advantage of this and kidnap him and force him to play the role of the don. VK is trained by the don's moll, played by Neha Dhupia who is also a wannabe actress. But things take yet another strange turn when another unusual incident takes place.

How will VK survive in this underworld game where deceit, lies, murder, conspiracy is a part of the game. What are the various other situations that VK is going to find himself in? How will he get out of it?

Mithya has several layers and they are brought to the fore by director Rajat Kapoor in an extremely adept manner. Each facet comes across as genuine. The film is filled with various twists and turns, thereby making the film unpredictable and interesting. The comic element explored in the first half is witty and keeps one entertained. Each and every character and situation in the film, even the bizarre ones, come across as convincing due to the ease with which Rajat Kapoor has executed the material. The plot of the film unravels with suspense and is not straightforward but takes several turns. This makes it exciting and different.

The climax of the film can be termed as different and leaves you with a mixed feeling. Also the latter part of the interval seems to drag on endlessly and the wit of the first half is missing in the second half, making it a bit dark and depressing. The latter portions could have also been better edited. Nonetheless the film's writing and screenplay are exemplary and it is definitely a good film. The cinematography is fine and the dialogues are engaging.

Performances are brilliant; Ranvir Shorey does complete justice to his role and delivers a first class performance. Neha Dhupia has a small role but delivers a good performance. Naseeruddin Shah is brilliant as usual; Saurabh Shukla, Vinay Pathak, Iravati, Harsh Chhaya etc deliver sincere performances. On the performance level every character suits the role to the tee, casting is accurate.

Mithya is an extremely intelligent film in terms of script and the screenplay unravels in a brilliant manner. But the film is definitely not for the masses but is for select audiences who can enjoy this different and intelligent film. At the box-office it may do above average through word of mouth.
