MazhaCast: Biju Menon,Lal, Samyuktha Language: Malayalam Director: Lenin Rajendran Camera: S.Kumar Music: Raveendran Year: 2000
Mazha is a departure from Lenin Rajendran’s usual arty fare. This middle-of-the-path genre offering is based on a story by Kamala Das and has many elements of sensuousness in it. Samyuktha, who plays the central role of Bhadra, gives her career-best performance in this film.
Mazha tells the story of Bhadra, who in her teens falls in love with her music tutor (Biju Menon). Later, she becomes a doctor by profession, who leads an estranged married life with her husband, a computer engineer. Though she finds solace in her work, she is constantly haunted by memories of her past and so one day she sets off in search of her lover.
The film has a refreshing theme and the credit goes to Lenin who also succeeds in bringing out the best in his lead players. The background score by Ravindran adds to the mood of the film. A film largely devoid of commercial elements, Mazha will be savoured by those on the lookout for a film with substance.
