Jayaram for the first time plays a dual role in Mayilattam, directed by V M Vinu whose earlier film Balettan was a big hit. The film is doing brisk business and is said to be an entertainer.

In this film, Devan (Jayaram) is a good guy with a heart of gold and is a farmer who wins the Karshakashree award from the government and is a role model for the village of Teroorkunnu. His family of three sisters and brother-in-law (Bindu Panikkar and Janardhanan) are like leeches that live off him.

His cousin Meenakshi (Indraja) is madly in love with him and Devan's trouble shooter is Dasan (Jagathy) a cunning and shrewd man. One day Devan has an argument with the local rowdy, Ripper (Riyaz Khan) who almost kills him. Devan and Dasan run away to Pollachi where they meet Palani (Jayaram), a look-alike of Devan and a street fighter.

Palani an aggressive man makes Devan hatch a plan by which the two switch places. Palani goes to Devan's village and Devan to Palani's. In Palani's village, Devan is able to win over everyone including Mayil (Rambha), daughter of the local village chieftain in Singanellore.

Meanwhile Palani who goes to Devan's village creates havoc and earns bad name and finally he murders Meenakshi. In the climax everything is sorted out and the villagers of Singanellore make Devan their chieftain.

Jayaram has done a very good job. The comedy scenes are really watchable but the only drawback is that the film is too sentimental. Both the heroines--Rambha and Indraja add glamour. The film also has Sai Kumar, Kalabhavan Mani, Oduvil and many others.
