Karthik (Dusshyanth) is the son of a rich Mumbai-based businessman. He is a thoroughly spoilt kid who is a Casanova and alcoholic. He is sent to a Medical college in Coimbatore for studies and in the new environment he meets students from middle class backgrounds.
Karthik looks down upon them and continues his wayward ways of life. In one of his drunken stupors Karthik gets hit by a lorry and is nursed back to health by four friends whom he had ignored earlier as “classless”. After several false pretensions Karthik finally finds his inner voice.
Meanwhile Coimbatore’s local goon and political strongman is Narayanan (Pasupathi) who is a narcissist. He was a rag picker turned ‘goonda’ transformed into a politician who always looks into the mirror and admires himself as he loudly says “Narayana…Narayana…”!
Karthik rubs him the wrong way and his son who is an eve-teaser gets beaten up. In a melee, Karthik accidentally pours acid on him which makes Narayanan mad. At the same time there is a girl Akshita (Subha Punja) who is madly in love with Karthik. The rest of the film is Karthik’s coming-of-age as a responsible citizen and in a climax at a quarry he kills the bad man and saves his friends.
Debutant director Vasantha Kumar has tried to make a racy film with all the commercial mix. He has also tried to bring out the friendship between Karthik and the four students in a sentimental way. Raihanah, the new music director has not been able to live up to the expectations of being A.R.Rahman’s sister. All the songs are fast paced ‘gana’ numbers with some inane lyrics like “Poda Poda Loosu…”
Dusshyanth as the ‘hero’ has improved leaps and bounds from Success, in dialogue delivery and expressions. Newcomer Subha Punja is there for songs and dances and is too skinny to be a Tamil heroine. Pasupati as the villain hams outrageously, very similar to his character in the recent Arul. On the whole Machi is entertaining and has a message on friendship.
