KuberanCast: Dilip, Samyuktha Varma, Uma Language: Malayalam Banner: Revathy Kalamandir Director: Sunder Das Producer: Menaka Suresh Kumar Camera: Salu George Story: V Ashok Lyrics: Gireesh Puthenchery Music: Mohan Sithara Year: 2002
Kuberan tells the story of a young man called Siddharthan, who cherishes fond dreams of becoming a Kuberan ie, a rich man. The man has a heart of gold and looks after three orphans. A tribal girl, Uma is madly in love with him, but he is more interested in giving a good time to his kids. On the first of every month, Siddharthan and three kids who give him company, come to live in a palatial bungalow just for a day and indulge in horse-racing, boat-racing and other pastimes of the rich.
The caretakers of the bungalow, Theyyunni and Abdu, arrange this for Siddharthan for a small amount. But one day, Siddharthan is caught red-handed by Pooja, the owner of the bungalow. This leads to many more developments. Dileep, who had his first hit in Sundar Das' Sallaapam and who is a very popular star now, does the role of Siddharthan while Samyuktha Verma is Pooja.
Keerthi (daughter of producer Menaka Suresh Kumar and Suresh Kumar), Master Vighnesh of Madhuranombarakaattu fame and Master Mohan Dasasahib fame give company to Dileep as the three kids. Others in the cast include Suresh Krishnan, Riza Bawa, Manka Mahesh, Bindu Ramakrishnan, Poojapura Ravi etc. Harisri Ashokan is Theyyunni while Indrans is Abdu. Jagathy Sreekumar essays a major role as sub-inspector Thimmayya.
Kuberan is old wine in a new bottle. Dileep has done it again. His new film Kuberan is proving to be a big hit.The idea of Sundar Das &Co is to make a slapstick comedy, as they had Dileep's dates. The end result however has fallen flat as even the scenes and dialogues are lifted from earlier comedies. All the comedy artists like, Jagathy Sreekumar, Kalabhavan Mani, Harisri Asokan and Indrans have walk in and walk out roles. Dileep is a very poor imitation of the Mohanlal of the early 90's. Samyuktha Varma looks jaded. The only saving grace is the newcomer Uma (who is old timer Sumita's daughter).
