Kochu Kochu SanthoshangalCast: Jayaram, Innocent, Lakshmi Gopalaswami, Bhanupriya Language: Malayalam Director: Satyan Anthicaudu Camera: Vipin Mohan Story: Satyan Anthicaudu Music: Illaiyaraja Year: 2000
Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal tells the story of Gopan, his wife Ashalakshmi and his son Achchu. Gopan, who works in a studio owned by Sekharettan, falls in love with Ashalakshmi, a rich girl. Both elope and get married in the face of stiff opposition from the girl`s father. After spending a few days with a friend at a distant place, they return and live happily in Gopan`s rented house. In due course a son is born to them. It is in the meantime that Ashalakshmi accidentally happens to perform with Maya Verma, a renowned dancer. Asha, who has an intense passion for dance, is thrilled at this and Gopan too is happy. Asha`s performance is appreciated by all and she gets many more opportunities to perform with Maya Verma at home and abroad. This results in a sort of marital discord and Gopan leaves the house with their son Achchu. He reaches Goa and works at a petrol bunk and also as a photographer catering to tourists. He thus brings up Achchu all on his own without ever revealing to the child anything about his mother. Some years later he accidentally happens to meet Maya Verma and this meeting brings back to his mind haunting memories of Asha. Meanwhile he doesn`t know that a lot of shocking revelations are in store for him. The story of Gopan and his family is told in flashback as being told by Gopan to Celine, the girl who runs a restaurant next door to the petrol bunk and who loves him and desires to marry him mistaking him for a widower.
Jayaram is at ease as Gopan while Lakshmi Gopalaswami(who had made her debut in Arayannangalude Veedu) too does her part fairly well as Asha Lakshmi. Bhanupriya as Maya Verma has done a really commendable job and the director seems to have paid particular attention to it that the character retains some amount of elegance and charm and does not appear too flamboyant and showy. Anyhow it is Master Kalidas who, as Achchu, steals the show with an excellent performance. He seems not at all camera shy and Malayalam Cinema seems to have got a new child-artist who shows promises of a good career. KPAC Lalitha and Mala Aravindan as the issueless aged couple living next door to Gopan and Asha have done a real good performance while Siddique, Lalu Alex and Oduvil Unnikrishnan too have played their respective characters very well. Kavya Madhavan, who had made her debut in Chandranudikkunna Dikkil has done a really appreciable job as Celine and she seems most likely to be the one who could fill the gap left by Manju Warrier quitting the scene.
Sathyan Anthicaud seems to be trying to effect some changes in his style of filmmaking with colourful frames shot in picturesque sets and locations. But that is not probably what the audience expects from him and that is why perhaps Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal does not appeal as much to the audience as Veendum Chila Veettukaaryangal. But still the audience is flocking to the theatres to spend a nice evening enjoying the film with their family.
