`Kallu Kondoru Pennu` tells the story of Sita, a nurse who works in the Gulf, whose main concern is the welfare of her brothers and sisters, who are at home in Kerala. Her elder brother Haridasan, along with his wife Ambika, is doing business, all started with money sent by Sita. At the same time, he has got himself in debts and owes large amounts of money to Sreekantan, a relative of Ambika. Sita`s younger brother Venu spends time roaming about, drinking and doing nothing and dreaming of getting a visa for the gulf, for which Sita has been trying hard. Sita`s younger sister Raji is awaiting marriage, and the prospective groom Mohanachandran too aspires of getting a visa along with his dowry. Sita, an efficient and charming nurse, is loved by Suresh, a doctor at the same hospital, but Sita, lost in the tangle of responsibilities towards her family, does not give proper response or encouragement to his love, though she too loves him. Sita leaves for home in connection with Raji`s marriage.
It is then that war breaks out in the Gulf. Sita`s whereabouts are unknown. A few days later when Sita`s photograph with a child, seen in a refugee camp, appears in the papers, rumours spread in her hometown that she is mother to an illegitimate child. Some days later, when Sita reaches home with a child, unaware of the picture that has appeared in the papers or the consequent developments, she finds that things have changed for her. Vijaya Shanti, who has always been identified with action roles, gets a chance here to attempt a change of image. As Sita, she appears different, reminding us of those days when she did roles like the one opposite Anil Kapoor in `Eeswar`, the Hindi remake of Kamal Haasan starrer Telugu film `Swathi Muthyam` (`Shippikul Muththu` in Tamil). Suresh Gopi as Suresh, Murali as Haridasan and Chithra as Ambika have done their part very well. Dileep as Venu has done full justice to his role while Harisri Ashokan as Aantappan, Venu`s friend- cum-the family driver, provides scope for comic relief.
