Ivar looks at the underworld from a very different perspective. The film attempts a very sensitive portrayal of the lives, aspirations and dreams of those who belong to the underworld gangs. The story of the film has in focus a youth named Raghava Menon who drifts into the ranks of a dreaded underworld gang led by Jose, known as 'Pambu' Jose.

The major flaw of Ivar is Rajeev's screenplay that is not uniformly taut and to the point. Perhaps there is an absence of a solid and straightforward plot with an emotional core. Instead the director has created characters like 'Pambu' Jose and an IPS officer Raghava Menon who on the spur of the moment can infiltrate into a powerful gang without any suspicion. Pambu Jose's encounters with his archrival Minnal are an uneven battle as the latter never scores throughout the film.

The characterisation is sketchy, as 'Pambu' Jose who is cunning, smart and a ruthless gangster never suspects Raghava Menon till the end. All the police officers are shown hand-in-glove with the underworld and the city police commissioner meets Jose on a daily basis in his den to drink and play cards with him! And in a mobile age, which police officer will talk to his superiors with a huge walkie-talkie?

Jayaram plays Raghava Menon while Biju Menon does the equally significant role of 'Pambu' Jose. Anil Murali, who had made his debut with Vaalkannaadi, plays another underworld don, Ninja Hakkim. The heroine Bhavana has got nothing to do in the film. Also in the cast are Siddique, Anoop Menon, Bhavana, Devi Ajith, P Balachandran, Riza Bawa, Vinayakan and Janardhanan.
