DevanCast: Vijaykanth, Arun Pandian, Meena, Sai Kumar Language: Tamil Director: Arun Pandian Producer: Friends Creation Year: 2002
Vijaykanth for the umpteenth time plays the angry middle aged cop in Arun Pandian’s 100th film Devan, which he himself directs. But the director treads a much-traversed path and the film is the usual run-of-the-mill action masala.
The film, in spite of the flaws manages to be an average murder mystery. Alex (Arun Pandian), who works as the chief reporter of Zen TV is said to be the killer of his friend (Thalaivasal Vijay) who is employed by Chetta Raghu (Sai Kumar) who runs an international rice cartel. Devan feels that he is framed up, so he is on the run from Tamilnadu Police who asks for the help of CBI Assistant Director Ratnavel (Vijaykanth). Ratnavel is also working on the ramification of rice smuggling cartel. Soon the CBI and the Television reporter gang up to finish the villains who run the rice cartel. They are helped by an advocate (Karthik) and a TV anchor (Meena). In the second part of the film, the story goes for a toss, as it becomes a dishum-dishum masala.
The role of the CBI officer is tailor made for the ageing Vijaykanth and he has done it with dignity. This time he does not sing duets with his heroine in foreign locales in multicolouered blazers,Thank God! But it is the Malayalam actor Sai Kumar who steals the thunder as the villain ‘Chetta’. Meena adds glamour to the proceedings. While Karthik sleepwalks through the film, Vivek’s comedy track is a big bore. On the whole the film is slow moving.
