Mammootty's Big-B, is a stylish and technically savvy film from cinematographer turned director Amal Neerad. It is a fast paced entertainer, which is packaged like Amal's guru Ram Gopal Varma films, aimed at the youth audience.
All ingredients that go into a yuppie action movie like designer look, shoot-outs, car chases, music video style song, is on display here. The film is inspired from director John Singleton's Hollywood action thriller Four Brothers, about four brothers who look to avenge their foster mothers murder. Here Mammootty does the lead role of the eldest brother made memorable by Mark Wahlberg in the original.
Mary teacher (Nafisa Ali) is a social activist in Fort Kochi area, who also runs an orphanage. She had a soft corner for four rough and tough orphans, and she adopts them as her own children- Bilal (Mammootty), Eddie ( Manoj.K Jayan), Murugan (Bala)and Bijoy (Sumit Naval) . The brothers have a great bonding and deep love for their mother.
The film opens with the brutal murder of Mary teacher, and the brothers Bilal, working as a bodyguard of the rich and famous in Mumbai; Eddie runs a local fast food joint, Murugan a film stuntman and Bijoy a student reunite. The DCP Balaji (Pasupati) an upright cop and his corrupt assistant George (Vijayraghavan) is in charge of investigations which does not reach anywhere.
Meanwhile Bilal and his brothers take up the case seeking to take revenge on their mother's killers. They soon find out that there is more to the murder, as the Mayor ( Ramesh) and an underworld don called Saiyuppu (Sherveer Vakil) are responsible for all their woes. The brothers decide to take vigilante justice and how they go about it forms the rest of the story.
The film is buoyed by some adrenaline-pumping action scenes choreographed by Anal Arasu , the shootout scene stands out and the guns used look real. What makes the film tick is Mammootty's overpowering presence as the brooding and deadly Bilal, the invincible hero. The villain Sherveer Vakil oozes menace as the arch-villain. Manoj.K. Jayan, Bala and others are all adequate.
Nafisa Ali as the mother of the four brothers has her trade mark big smile in a short and sweet role. Mamta Mohandas as Bala's pair sizzle on the silver sands of Dhanushkodi in Bo Derek style with the hit number, Muthumazha… tuned by Alphonse.
Technically the film is very good with camerawork of Sameer Tahir and fast cut editing of Vivek Harshan. Big-B is a breezy, entertainer made slickly like a upmarket Bollywood thriller. Watch the action and munch on your popcorn, and have fun.
