Anjaneya

Cast: Ajith, Meera Jasmine, Raghuvaran, Anu Hassan, Manivannan
Language: Tamil
Banner: NIC Arts
Director: Maharajan
Producer: Chakravarthy
Camera: P. Selva Kumar
Music: Mani Sharma
Year: 2003

The film starts off at Thenkasi where Paramaguru (Ajith) lives with his sister (Anu Hassan). Later on he succeeds in getting selected for IPS and moves to Chennai to live with his father (Raghuvaran) at Anjaneya colony. Guru cannot tolerate injustice. Knowing about his temperamental nature, Guru’s father makes his son promise that he would never lose his calm under any circumstances. So Guru keeps his temper in check. Enters Divya a law student (Meera Jasmine) who plays Paramaguru’s love interest. The story begins as an ex-convict takes up residence near Guru’s home. He is the right hand man of the local bigwig Reddy who controls all the politicians. Guru’s temper causes him to lash out at them and thus he is framed in a false case and the DGP Vinu Chakravarthy makes him ineligible for the IPS post. Guru sues the police department and perhaps the most entertaining part of the film begins in the courtroom. Through a series of long dialogues Guru wins the case and becomes IPS. The rest of the film shows how Guru fights for justice and the poor and his attempts to bring into light a case where three government officials were murdered by Reddy.

Ajith looks good as an angry young cop-fighting single handedly against all social evils and anti social elements. Meera Jasmine just comes in two songs and does nothing creditable. Maharajan has adopted the plot from the super hit Malayalam film Kireedam (Mohanlal starrer) that features the aspirations of a father about his son becoming a police officer. The film moves interestingly from the beginning till the interval courtroom scene. But sadly after the interval it falls flat since there is nothing by way of story. Host of talented artistes like Manivannan, Raghuvaran, Anu Hassan, Ramesh Khanna, Kovai Sarala, Vaiyapuri and Seetha are not properly utilized. Mani Sharma’s music is average. Peter Haynes stunts are worth mentioning.
