The shooting for '12B' has been completed and the film is to be shortly released. The debut directorial venture of cinematographer Jeeva, (who has photographed most of director Shankar's films and director Surya's 'Vaali' and 'Khushi') who has had his apprenticeship with P.C. Sriram, '12B' is a much anticipated film. For, it brings together the two heartthrobs of Tamil cinema, Simran and Jyotika. The two had acted in 'Vaali' too, but for Jyotika it was a cameo role, and the duo didn't have any scenes together. Here they do share the scenes in a few frames. Playing hero to the duo is debutant Shaam. Born in Madurai, brought up in Bangalore, Shaam has had a stint of training at the acting institute of Roshan Taneja in Mumbai, and has done some modelling too.
Jeeva writes the story-screenplay-dialogue, directs the film and is its cinematographer too. The film is produced by Vikram Singh for his banner 'Film Works'. He had earlier co-produced some Hindi films with Boney Kapoor, (brother of Anil Kapoor) like 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja', 'Judai' etc. This is his first Tamil venture. Harris Jayaraj scores the music, while Thota Tharani designs the sets. Editing is by Lennin-Vijayan, dance choreography by Raju Sundaram and stunts arranged by Vikram Dharma.
Shaam has a sort of dual role in the film, one where he appears as a fantasy figure for one of the heroines. Says Jeeva of his film, "It's a love story, slightly different from the usual ones. I kept the title because '12B' was the bus route I often took in my college days in Chennai. The story is related to the bus, but does not take place entirely in the bus. "Also in the film's cast are Moon Moon Sen, Cho and Vivek. Vivek plays a mechanic and runs a shop called 'Alavanthan'. "He is a sincere worker", says Jeeva of Vivek.
The director has made all efforts to see that the film lives up to the expectations. A romantic song was shot on Shaam and Simran at the picturesque locations in Jordan, and this reportedly is the first time that a Tamil film has been shot there. Rekha Prakash choreographed it. Some sequences needed to be shot in the USA with about 300 hundred dancers involved. A very expensive affair, so the director had the ambience of the streets in the US, recreated in a studio in Chennai.
Both Jyotika and Simran have nice things to say about their working together. Says Simran, "We're working together with almost equal roles and it was nice working with Jyotika after 'Vaali'. Though we didn't have any scenes together in 'Vaali', we share some frames here. I'm also amazed at the work put in by Shaam. He's a good actor and very impressive in his first film."
A surprise casting is of Sunil Shetty who plays a cameo role in his first appearance in a Tamil film.
