Kamal Hassan conferred doctorate

Kamal Hassan, one of the finest actors in the country was given his due recognition when the Sathyabama Deemed University conferred the doctorate on him on Monday evening at the Jeppiaar Nagar in Chennai.

In the function which lasted for nearly four-hours, V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission, said that the doctorate given to Kamal Hassan would serve as a benchmark in the discipline of arts.

Jeppiaar, Chancellor of the university who awarded the doctorate, said "Kamal Hassan is someone who thoroughly studies every character he plays on screen. He is a total professional".

Vijayakanth, who is the Nadigar Sangam chief, said that Kamal Hassan is the heir to Sivaji Ganesan's throne and an emotional Prabhu supported him by saying that the position occupied by his father now belonged to his elder brother Kamal.

Prabhu also read out a note from superstar Rajnikanth, who is away in Hyderabad shooting for Chandramukhi saying he was proud of his very good friend. "I am sure there is more to come for Kamal". K.Balachandar, Kamal's mentor and guru said in a lighter vein: "Now he should teach me direction as he has become an actor par excellence" which brought a round of applause from the packed auditorium.

"That feels like getting another doctorate, as he is affectionate like my father. As a son it is my duty to say that it is he who sculpted the actor in me" said an emotionally moved Kamal when he made his thanksgiving speech accepting the doctorate.
