Kareena Kapoor Tells How Being Awkward with Rahul Bose in Chameli Helped

Chameli has a hooker and a corporate hotshot falling in loves. Sounds like a desi Pretty Woman.

No, it isn't a loves story. It's short, sweet and will change dimensions. It's the shortest film I've ever done at one hour 45 minutes, It isn't the typical sex worker and guy film, though he does rescue her from her problems.

So how is Chameli, the charactor, different ?

She isn't like the sex workers that you saw in Mandi or Pyaasa. She's more innocent, because most of them get into the profession when they're 13-14 years old. I've maintained that raw, innocent nature. It's my first nonmainstream role and I was so curious. People may wonder what I'm doing in Rs 400 saree, but that has workerd in my favour.

You must have had to use colourful language. Does Kareena swear ?

Not at all! I'am very ladylike, not crass and crude. But Chameli has these little nuances and isn't seductive. She's more innocently sensuous.

Crackling chemistry between Rahul Bose and you? he imitated you on TV, does he do that a lot ?

(Looking heavanward) All the time! He has a flair for comedy. But the wonderful part was that he's from a calssier scholl of thought. That made us a little awkward at first and it really worked for the film.

Halfway through Chameli, director Anant Balani died and Sudhir Mishra completed it.

The concept of two strangers meeting one stormy night was Anant's and that has stuck. But it is Suddir Mishra's film in the way it has been made.

What of People saying that Kareena's going arty ?

No, I am striking a balance. Chameli is of beat, but it is differ from the potboilers where you just go to New York and make a great movie. I have Mani Ratnam's Yuva, Abbas Mustan's Aitraaz, Priyadarshan's untitled film with Akshay Khanna, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani and Satish Kaushik's love story with Shahid Kapur. It's a whole mix.
