From Paramakudi, a small village in South India, to winning an international award in Minsk , Belaurus...
When I studied in the Municipality Elementary School in Paramakudi......a remote village in Tamil Nadu , South India, my only worry was ....how could I manage to get Ramanathan's father transferred out of my village. Ramanathan was a 10 year old chappy who was between me and the first rank in class! My dad Charuhasan consoled me and promised to talk to the P.M of India and throw him out of school and his dad out of his office! Within six months, Ramanthan's dad actually got transferred to Madurai and I was in bliss. I was so grateful to my dad - but he never told me that he had nothing to do with it. My happiness was however short lived as another smartie called Arunachalam came upon the scene to shatter my dreams of being first in class! I gave him such a tough time......I was first in class till I grew up enough to realize how lovely it is to be average and not over ambitious! When I stopped being over ambitious success and laurels came my way!
Born In a huge joint family.....now living in a 3 member nuclear family!
Joint families are still a dream in this modern mechanical society ..! It's always a pleasure to be with 18 to 20 people. My grand father, a very successful criminal Lawyer, was a man who loved movies more than anything . We kids, along with my grandfather had a habit of watching movies every day .Mind You every night! One movie a night was fine but having dinner at 5 in the evening everyday was a torture! He always wanted me to be a star!
He literally drilled cinema into me right from the age of eight . I am glad I was able to care for him and comfort him, when he was paralysed in his eighties!
My grandfather must have been a proud and contented man ! Kamalhasan, his son, became a big Star , and me his grand daughter was also a moderate star..... My Dad Charuhasan (his first son ) was a successful lawyer who took a sudden de-tour to acting....Landed up with the National award in 1986.......
My two sisters Nandhini and Bashini are literate, unlike me!
Nan is a Doctor in U.K and Bash teaches! They both are more beautiful than me but I became a movie star! That's life!
Marriage was a great MAGIC in my life.... . When I was too busy in my career I had to get settled in my personal life too. I met Maniratnam who was also equally busy. We met .... Got married in 50 days! Now I live with Mani and my 6 year old brat Nandan......!
Mani too grew up in a larger joint family than mine! And we do feel that Nandan is missing all the fun we had!!
But this is 21'st Century ! Ain't it?
Journey From a Commoner...to........a star!
I was 12, when I came to the big city Madras to live with my Grandmother and my uncle Kamalhasan who was just starting to act in films! But going to see movies in the theatres continued with Grandma! She was a rebel ! She did not believe in Schools and education! It made little difference to her whether when I got 98 or 65..!
Slowly my grandma and Kamal got me disinterested in studies and got me hooked to cinema! I became a student of cinema at the film School in Madras to learn cinematography
My Mum was too shocked that I was not studying English Literature and she refused to talk to me for 3 months!
After 2 years I landed in front of camera as an actress and there has been no looking back after that! 100 odd films in 8 years not a bad track record for someone from Paramakudi..... Awards.....Fame ...Money .....Success .....All came in soon and left me dizzy, But made me mature and balanced!
A constant battle every woman is fighting!
After 9 years of marriage I have a happy home and a career that exists!
I do act in 3 films a year.....I have directed 2 tele plays .....a feature film ...Indira..... A film on empowerment of women and I do keep a balance.Balance that suits me!
Today I have no complaints about my home and no hassles about my career..There is a hapy mixture of everything.
