Nayanthara

She had completed her B.A. literature and was doing her C.A. when films beckoned her. He debut film was the Malayalam 'Manassinakkare' where she had Jayaram as her hero, and Sathyan Anthikad as the director. Then came two films with Mohanlal. Her soft, pretty looks captured the attention of Malayalam film buffs and of director Hari too. He saw her photo in a magazine and soon Nayanthara was called by the Tamil director to act in 'Ayya', for the prestigious banner of K Balachander, with Sarath Kumar as hero. Nayanthara was catapulted to limelight when she was signed for 'Chandramukhi' and was paired with none other than Superstar Rajinikant himself.

Interview with Nayanthara

Looking pretty and glamorous in a black outfit, Nayanthara was late by an hour for the press meet, apologised profusely, and went on to answer the questions fielded to her.

Nayanthara

How was it to act with Rajinikant?

"He used to come and see every shot. If it was good he'll appreciate it… and if he felt there could be an improvement… he's very dedicated, sincere and punctual. We can learn a lot from him personally and professionally.:."

What's her character like in 'Chandramukhi'?

"My name is Durga in the film. I knew it was not the lead character when I committed to it... but I'm very happy with it, and that I'm paired with the Superstar…", says the actress.

On why she's acting with only senior heroes…

Nayanthara

"I got offers only with senior actors that's why… and when you get an offer with Rajini Sir, you don't say 'no'... I didn't have any feeling of age difference, but I don't know if he felt it. With Sharat Kumar too it was a very comfortable experience…"

Her roles so far, whether it was her Malayalam films or her two Tamil releases, have been homely ones. Would she do glamorous roles where it needs some revealing outfits?

"If the character demands one to be modern, one has to. We can't keep a boundary for glamour. It depends on the character and on each person too, as to how much she wants to expose... and also how comfortable she's doing it. In my case, it depends on my role. If it demands glamorous outfits, I'm not averse to it. I've not as such set a boundary for it."

What's the difference between acting in Malayalam cinema and Tamil cinema? While most actors say that the two are not very different, Nayanthara speaks differently.

Nayanthara

"The two fields are totally different. Where the remuneration is concerned, and also where the script and charecterisation is concerned. Tamil industry has a bigger market. In Tamil films they give more importance to glamour elements and songs…"

A scribe asked her about the casting couch. The actress didn't understand it. Someone from the back quipped 'compromises?'

Nayanthara again failed to catch it, had a hasty consultation with her manager and then replied, "I cannot really say anything right now. I'm very new to the Tamil industry."

On her future projects, she has 'Kalvanin Kadhali' with actor-director S J Suriya, 'Gajini' with hero Surya, 'Vallavan' with Simbu and two Malayalam films with Mammooty, 'Raapagal' and 'Thaskaraveeran'.
